My Personal Philosophy of Librarianship...

I believe...

I believe that in a democratic, free-thinking society such as ours, all men and women should have the right to access, read, view, discuss, and comment upon any and all information in an unrestricted and unmonitored fashion.  I feel it is my duty as a librarian to encourage others to express their opinions and viewpoints, as well as to read, analyze, evaluate, and examine the various ideas, opinions and viewpoints of others--whether they are agreed with or not.  Free people should have the right to freely read or listen to the ideas of others, especially without the government's prying eyes snooping over their shoulders.

I believe that libraries are lights and librarians are the keepers and stewards of those lights.  As a keeper and steward of one of those lights, I will ensure that the light I am charged to keep will never dim; for if it dims those who depend on its light will be in darkness.  A citizenry in darkness will never be able to hold the government accountable for its actions.  Only an alert, engaged, informed, information literate citizenry--one that cares about its freedoms--can force those in power to answer for their actions.
